It has been more than 30 years and we’re still having the same conversation on DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) in Austin nonprofit board rooms. For this reason we saw a unique opportunity to bring forward the movement makers that bootstrapped their leadership careers, even if they were the only ones at one time in some of these board rooms. And we know they’ve dealt with different obstacles, had to create opportunities, and strategically navigate white spaces in their own ways.
While The New Philanthropists continuously works on progressing and changing this sector, leaders of color still need extra support facing board room norms such as tokenism, microagressions, and isolation to say the least. That’s why we started the Board Mentors of Color program, to bring forward the thought leaders, disrupters and trailblazers that have served countless times on nonprofit boards and have rich experience to share with the next in line. From strategic consultants, lawyers, media professionals to insiders, our 2019 mentors are ready to pay it forward and provide support, advice and connections to a wider, untapped and phenomenal network in the Austin community. We’re honored to showcase these established and experienced board leaders and hope you will consider connecting with them through our new program and more than anything learn from their lived experience.
